Using Improv to Become a Better Advocate

Learning to be a better advocate, for myself and others, connects to my love of improv in a meaningful way.

Aside from experiencing fun and joy, I love improv because it helps me

  • be more present in the moment and in my body,

  • feel more confident,

  • express myself more effectively,

  • more effectively get my own needs met in interpersonal, professional, and healthcare situations,

  •  connect more deeply to community.

All of these facets of improv help me to be a better advocate for myself and others. These are also the skills I try to support improv students in building.

To put it very, very mildly - there is a lot going on in the world right now. The need to advocate for ourselves, our communities, as well as for meaningful policy and institutional change seem to just be growing by the day. While improv won’t get us to the finish line for these goals, the skills we learn can definitely get us started in the right direction.

AllProv is hosting a Zoom discussion on Improv and Advocacy on December 12! We’ll be chatting about how to effectively use Improv to teach Advocacy skills. Check our this link to read more about it and register.
